Hologlyphics is the art of performing true 3D animations along with
with music. It combines elements of holography, music, video
synthesis, visionary film, electronic music, sculpture and
improvisation to create a unique new artform. Emphasis is focused on
exploration of new, previously unseen 3D animations, patterns,
scenes and glyphs, not on photorealistic imagery.

These spatial visuals are seen in full 3D without glasses. Although
not the same technical process as holography, the visual result is
the same, a True 3D image with full horizontal parallax. Horizontal
parallax allows you not only to see the animation in 3D, but to see
all views of the animation scene within a 90 degree viewing range.
As you walk left to right, the perspective of the image changes as
in the real world.

The Hologlyphic Funkalizer is a performance based Analog/Digital
video synthesis system, that displays moving true 3D images,
intertwined with music and spatial sound. Visuals and sounds are
controlled by musical keyboards, acoustic instruments, sound
sculptures and a unique control panel. Sounds can be associated and
interact with images, modulate each other and undergo vast spatial
transformations in the aural and visual
realm.

Nate Boyce’s analog and digital skills merge to form entirely new
and insanely psychedelic videos that explore the thresholds of
perceptual ambiguity. Oakland duo Chen Santa Maria duo mix electro
acoustic sound sources, samplers, drum machines, and guitars to hone
their varied outputs. Their collaboration results in stunning and
immersive performances of aural and optic strobe.

KALW-FM ‘Documents the Downturn’ with Your Help

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

By Holly Kernan, KALW News Director

[Note: KALW-FM was a producing partner with Indy Arts-affiliate Newsdesk.org on 2008's Election Truthiness Report.]

* Help KALW document the downturn!
* The Economic Edge home page

At KALW news, I’m pleased to announce the launch of our new project designed to tap into the power of our community. We’re calling it “The Economic Edge: Documenting the Downturn.”

The goal: to cover how the economic crisis is affecting you and your community.

We need your help to make it happen. We aren’t asking for money, just a little bit of your time. The project will combine the efforts of our reporters with those of people from all over the bay.

That’s where you come in.

When was the last time you went to a neighborhood watch meeting? Or dropped by a merchants association meeting? Are you interested in learning how your neighborhood is coping with the bad economy? Or maybe you just want to have your stories heard and represented in our coverage. It would be difficult for us to spend time in every corner of the Bay Area that we would like to reach.

Now you can lend us a hand, and take an active role in representing and engaging with your community. We’ve made the process simple: you choose a meeting or event in your city, attend, and report back to us via the phone and/or post a blog report.

The second phase of this project will be to ask the question: How can we come together to address some of our community needs?

But first, help us understand the scope of this crisis in our communities. Please pass this along to your network.

Together, we can make an impact on our community!

Noted: Chicago Tribune on NEA Funding

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

[Note: Here's an excerpt from a Chicago Tribune op-ed for anyone interested in the arts as fundamental to our democratic society.]

Why arts funding should be in stimulus

By Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune, February 9, 2009

In the recent debate over the Barack Obama administration’s economic recovery bill, proposals to spend government money on the arts have become poster children for pork.

“The National Endowment for the Arts,” wrote sarcastic editorialists at the National Review last week, “is in line for $50 million, increasing its total budget by a third. The unemployed can fill their days attending abstract-film festivals and sitar concerts.”

In the Senate, an amendment sponsored by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) lumped museums, theaters and arts centers (a terrifyingly vague term) with such frippery as casinos, golf courses and swimming pools as recipients who must be stopped from getting any of this funding. The amendment passed 73-24 on Friday, with many Democrats voting in the majority.

It is time for the American arts community to confront its stunning political ineptitude. It has arrived at a place where there seems to be no one to make its case; no one, at least, free from the taint of self-interest …

The Begged, Borrowed and Stolen: Socha Film Project Screening TONIGHT 2/5 @ 8pm

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The Begged, Borrowed and Stolen: Socha Film Project is a monthly screening
that gives local ultra-low budget or sometimes, no budget filmmakers the
chance to screen their work to an audience of supportive peers, held each
month at the Socha Cafe in San Francisco’s Mission District. In addition to
screening the work, comment/score cards are distributed to all audience
members, which at the end of the night are tallied and given to each of the
filmmakers so that they may see the individual’s responses to their films.
The filmmakers who have made the largest impact on the audience are given
film related prizes generously donated by the professional film community.
This motivates the talented artist both personally as well as financially,
and is our communities way of saying “go make another film.”

The Fifth Monthly Begged, Borrowed and Stolen: Socha Film Project will be
held on Thursday, Feb. 5th at 8pm at the Socha Cafe: 3235 Mission Street (@
Valencia) *
