If you don’t happen to be Amish, or from Pennsylvania farm country, you might not know that a “barn raising” is a stone-soup event, where folks show up with materials, ideas and energy to contribute to a singular act of creation.
Such as building a barn. Making an awesome kettle of soup. Or creating the 11th Annual Expo for Independent Arts, which returns to CELLspace this fall.
On Tuesday, July 20, at 6:00 p.m. at the Luggage Story Gallery, we’re having a stone-soup party and a barn-raising to help create this year’s Expo. You’re invited to help define the Expo’s annual focus on ARTS SKILLS, RESOURCES and COMMUNITY.
What can you bring to the table?
- ADVICE: Top priority. Come tell us about what’s been working with the Expo, and what you’d do differently.
- PROPOSALS: Got workshops? Music? Art? Performance? There’s room at the Expo come September!
- EXHIBITORS: Know any arts-service organizations that you think should have exhibitor tables at CELLspace?
- VOLUNTEERS: We welcome your support producing, booking, promoting, setting up the Expo at CELLspace this fall (and cleaning up afterwards!).
- SPONSORSHIPS: Come get the scoop about promoting your business or organization by sponsoring the Expo.
The Expo is a community-service event for the arts in San Francisco. We thank you for your participation and support! Please RSVP for our Stone Soup/Barn Raising, and see you next Tuesday at the Luggage Store.

With the economy in recession, but new creative opportunities, communities and participatory cultural movements emerging, the role of the Expo for Independent Arts has never been more important.
The Expo provides a central, physical place to meet, mingle, and access the SKILLS, RESOURCES and COMMUNITY you need to create the kind of art — and the kind of world — you want to live in.
Come to the Luggage Store on Tuesday, July 20, to help create this year’s edition of the Expo — and help us define the next ten years of this unique community gathering, as well.
