The play Water Spirits gives voice to diverse groups within the Black community, in particular the Black communities in Louisiana post-Hurricane Katrina and the historic Yoruba people of Nigeria. But more than giving voice, the interactive play is a conversation with Black communities as it explores the impact of trauma. In a past staged reading of the play, the ensuing conversation in the post-show Q&A and talkback with a multi-racial audience, allowed for a true exchange of perspectives, real vulnerability, and bonding that couldn't be anticipated.
The mission of the current project is to perfect the interactive elements of the play to further engage audiences and stimulate multi-racial conversation.
